acoustic timber fence by Golde

STANDARD ACOUSTIC TIMBER FENCE

GOLDE standard specification (for residential acoustic fence)

  • Height: approximately 2.4 m to 3.0 m (depending on noise source, distance, elevation)
  • Posts: treated timber or galvanised steel, deeper embedment/foundations than      standard fence.
  • Rails: e.g., 3 rails of treated pine (or more if height exceeds 2 m) — example: rails 75×50 mm treated pine for a timber-acoustic fence.
  • Boards or Palings: vertical treated pine boards butted together (no gaps), typically heavier boards than standard fence. “heavy acoustic” 15 kg/m².
  • Sealing: Acoustic seal at panels/joints and at bottom (to prevent sound egress) as required in specification.
  • Material durability: Treated timber, corrosion-protected steel, etc so the acoustic performance is maintained over life.
  • Consideration of drainage, maintenance, gaps, vegetation etc: e.g., fences shouldn’t impede drainage, avoid ponding, must avoid gaps underneath etc

Material List – Acoustic Timber Fence (50 m long × 2.4 m high)

1. Posts (structural)

  • 25–27 × H4 Treated Pine or Galv. Steel posts
    • Post spacing: 2.1 m centres (acoustic fence = tighter spacing)
    • Post size options:
      • TP 125×125 mm H4
      • Steel SHS 100×100×4 mm
    • Length:  3.0–3.2 m (to allow 600–800 mm embedment)

2. Concrete for Post Footings

  • 25–27      footings
  • Typical footing: 300–350 mm diameter × 700–800 mm deep
  • Volume needed: ~ 2.0–2.5 m³ concrete total
    • (approx. 0.085–0.095 m³ per post)

3. Rails

For a 2.4 m acoustic fence, 3 rails minimum, sometimes 4 rails to prevent vibration.

  • 75×50  mm H3 treated pine rails
  • Rail  length: 4.8 m
  • Quantity:   35–40 rails
    • (Each panel uses 3 rails × ~24 panels along 50 m)

4. Acoustic Boards (no gaps)

You have two main options:

Option A — Overlapped “Acoustic Planks” (high mass)

  • 19–25 mm thick treated pine boards
  • 150–175 mm wide
  • Installed vertical with overlap (no air gaps)
  • Wall density target: 18–20 kg/m²

Quantity example:

  • 50      m × 2.4 m = 120 m² wall area
  • Boards 150 mm cover = 6.66 board per metre
  • Need ~800 boards @ 2.4 m length
(Or buy longer lengths and cut as required)

Option B — Prefabricated Acoustic Timber Panels

(Recommended for consistency and speed)

  • Typical size: 2.4 m × 2.1 m
  • Panels have interlocking edges, acoustic-rated density
  • Quantity: ~24–25 panels

5. Acoustic Sealing Materials

Acoustic performance depends heavily on sealing.

  • Acoustic barrier tape: 50–60 m roll × 3 rolls
    • Used between rails and boards/panels
  • Bottom strip / kickboard:
    • 200×25  mm treated pine × 25 pieces
  • Edge flashing or capping (optional but recommended):
    • 50m aluminium or timber top cap

6. Fixings (heavy duty)

Because the fence must not rattle:

For rails to posts

  • Bugle batten screws 14g × 100 mm
    • 2–3 per connection
    • Total:  150–180 screws

For boards to rails

  • Coated decking screws 10g × 65–75 mm
    • 4–6 per board
    • Total:    3,500–4,000 screws

For continuous acoustic panels

  • 12g x 100 mm timber screws
    • ~10  per panel
    • Total: 250 screws

7. Optional Components

(These improve durability and reduce maintenance)

Post caps

  • 25 units (timber or plastic)

Anti-rot membrane

  • For bottom boards touching soil: 50 m

Stain / Oil / Weatherproof coating

  • 20–25 litres (2 coats recommended)
