Basic standards for a Koala proof fence:
- The fence must be both dog-proof and koala-proof.
- Fencing must be a minimum 1.8 m high in the context of koalas (and higher when also dog-proofing 2.4m high) where an infrastructure action is being assessed.
- There must be a minimum 50 cm wide scratch panel (on the outside of the fence) that prevents koalas climbing over.
- It must be positioned 3 m clear of any retained trees or overhanging branches that koalas could use to bypass the barrier.
- There must be a permanently funded maintenance plan / monitoring arrangement in perpetuity.
Koala‑Sensitive Design Guidelines Version 2 (Queensland Dept. of Environment & Science):
- A summary of “koala exclusion fencing” (i.e., fencing that prevents koalas entering areas where they are at risk).
- For example, fencing using metal sheet, timber without gaps, or chain-wire plus a “floppy top” or 600 mm exclusion element on top if using chain wire.
- The top of the ‘unclimbable’ section of the fence is to be at least 1.5 m from the ground in one example.
